Here's what you need to know:
Beaches naturally use their dunes to replenish sand and recover from erosion events. Dunes are nature's seawalls, they act like the precious lungs of the beach … breathing in and out with the tides. Sand is deposited, washed away. Breathe in. Breathe out. For the vast swathes of Australia’s uninhabited shoreline it’s a dynamic, natural process. But when humans build seawalls on beaches to protect private property and infrastructure, they harden the coast and remove its ability to recover naturally. One thing is absolutely certain according to coastal scientists worldwide: vertical seawalls protect land property in the short-term but, eventually, destroy beaches.
Now a 7 metre-high, concrete, vertical seawall has been built in front of private properties on Collaroy/Narrabeen beach. Seawalls of this design have been shown – all over the world- to destroy beaches. Seawalls have the inevitable effect of reflecting and concentrating wave energy and accelerating erosion. Eventually, the beach narrows and disappears.
There are other ways of protecting private property that do not risk the loss of our precious beach system.
Do we accept this as Collaroy's future? Will these plans be soon coming to a beach near you?

The worst of seawall design are towering vertical structures made of concrete… that’s what the Northern Beaches Council has built - without any serious effort to inform beach lovers. The council claims it has expert advice on the construction of the seawall, so why can't we see it? The seawall has been approved by Council for the benefit of a handful private property owners, at the expense of this important public space.
"Council's priority has always been to support residents to protect their properties as long as there is no negative impact on the beach" - Ray Brownlee CEO Northern Beaches Council.
These are OUR beaches, it’s up to US to save them!
Science tells us, unequivocally, that Collaroy/Narrabeen Beach has been given a death sentence, unless we act NOW!
There are other less-damaging solutions such as beach nourishment and offshore artificial reefs, which have both been successfully implemented in areas such as the Gold Coast.
Do not let the Northern Beaches Council and NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes extend the seawall and kill your beach too!
